Tomorrow’s Table - Evolution of Genetically Modified Food
As Professor of the Department of Plant Pathology at University of California, Davis, Dr. Pamela Ronald focuses her work on rice – a staple for 50% of the world’s people.
With her colleagues and students, she has genetically engineered rice for resistance to diseases and flooding. Her husband, RaoulAdamchak, manages the certified organic farm on the UC Davis campus.
In their new book, Tomorrow's Table, they argue that to meet the appetites of the world's population without drastically hurting the environment, a visionary new;approach: combining genetic engineering and organic farming must be adopted.
Dr. Pamela Ronald
Dr. Pamela Ronald is Professor of Plant Pathology and Chair of the Plant Genomics Program at the University of California, Davis, where she studies the role that genes play in a plant’s response to its environment. She also serves as Director of Grass Genetics at the Joint Bioenergy Research Institute in Emeryville.
Her laboratory has genetically engineered rice for resistance to diseases and flooding, both of which are the most serious causes of crop loss in Africa and Asia.
Dr. Ronald also currently serves on the editorial boards for Plant Physiology and a new journal, Plant Molecular Physiology, jointly launched by the Chinese Academy of Science, the Shanghai Institute of Biological Sciences (SIBS), and the UC Berkeley Center for Molecular Life Science.
Raoul Adamchak
Raoul Adamchak has grown organic crops for twenty years, part of the time as a partner in Full Belly Farm, a private 150-acre organic vegetable farm. He has inspected over one hundred organic farms as an inspector for California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and served as a member and President of CCOF's Board of Directors. He now works at the U.C. Davis Agricultural Sustainablitiy Institute as an academic Coordinator where he teaches organic farming on the certified organic farm on campus.
